In practice
An aluminium door is used thousands of times a year. The profile carries the glass and takes the wind, but it is the hinges, rollers, tracks and locking gear that wear — and those are exactly where a cheap quotation economises quietly. A door that drops or binds after eighteen months has almost never suffered a frame failure. It has hardware that was never rated for the weight of the leaf it was asked to carry.
That matters more here than in a milder climate. A large glazed leaf on a villa terrace can weigh well over a hundred kilograms, it is opened and closed in 45°C heat, and fine dust gets into every track. Rollers rated close to the leaf weight will fail; rollers rated comfortably above it will not. Stainless components in a coastal position will outlast plated steel by years.
Configuration follows how the opening is used, not how it looks in the drawing. A hinged door seals best, because the leaf compresses against gaskets on all four sides — the right choice for a main entrance where air-tightness and security matter. Sliding doors take no swing space, which is why they dominate balconies and terraces, but a sliding leaf runs on brushes rather than compression seals, so it will never be as tight. Lift-and-slide systems solve that: the leaf lifts off its seals to move and drops onto them when closed, giving a sliding action with a hinged door’s seal. Bi-folding doors open a whole wall, at the cost of a stack of leaves parked to one side and considerably more hardware to maintain.
Thermal breaks matter on any elevation that takes direct sun. A polyamide strip between the inner and outer sections interrupts the heat path through the frame, which shows up as a frame that is not painful to touch in the afternoon and a room the air conditioning is not fighting all day.
A door that drops after eighteen months is not a frame failure. It is hardware that was never rated for the leaf.

Questions
Sliding, in almost every case — a hinged leaf needs swing space that terraces rarely have. If air-tightness matters as much as space, a lift-and-slide gives you a sliding action with a hinged door’s seal, because the leaf drops onto its gaskets when closed.
They are, but they have more moving parts than any other configuration, and fine dust in the tracks is the enemy. They need brushing out regularly. If the opening is used daily rather than occasionally, a large sliding system is often the more practical choice.
Usually. Send photographs of the frame profile, the glazing bead and the hardware, plus the leaf dimensions. Those three things normally identify the system family closely enough to match.
No. Thermal breaks interrupt heat flow between outside and inside — on an internal opening there is nothing to interrupt. We will tell you when it is not worth the money.
Heavier than most people expect, provided the track and rollers are specified for it. The limit in practice is usually the structure above the opening and how the glass will be lifted into place, not the door system.
