What people actually mean when they say “we need it quieter”
Almost every partition enquiry arrives with the same brief: keep it open, keep it light, but make it quieter. Those requirements pull against each other, and the honest conversation is about how much quieter — because the answer changes the specification and the budget with it.
A single-glazed frameless partition in 10mm or 12mm toughened glass is the lightest-looking option and by far the most common. It takes the edge off normal conversation, but it will not contain a raised voice or a speakerphone. The weak points are never the glass — they are the joints: the butt joint between panes, the gap at the head, and the door. A dry butt joint leaks sound badly; a properly filled clear silicone joint helps noticeably.
Where the requirement is real acoustic separation — a director’s office, a consulting room, an HR meeting room — the answer is a double-glazed partition with two panes of different thickness, because two identical panes resonate together and undo much of the benefit. The perimeter matters just as much: acoustic seals at head and jambs, a sealed floor line, and an acoustic door with a drop seal. A double-glazed partition with a poorly sealed head performs worse than a well-sealed single-glazed one.
Then there is the ceiling, which is where most partition packages quietly disappoint. A partition that stops at a suspended ceiling leaves an open plenum above it, and sound travels straight over the top through the void. If acoustic performance genuinely matters, the partition has to reach the soffit or the plenum has to be baffled. That is a coordination question rather than a glass question, and it is the reason we ask to see the reflected ceiling plan before we quote.

Yes, always. Creating rooms out of an open floorplate changes the coverage requirement, and that has to be re-planned by the M&E contractor. We flag it during setting-out because it is the most common cause of a failed inspection after partitions go in.
They look excellent and never collect dust, but they cannot be serviced without opening the sealed unit, and they require double glazing whether or not you needed it acoustically. Room-side blinds cost a fraction and anyone can repair them. Both are legitimate — just decide deliberately.
