In practice
On a sliding glass door, the visible glass is the easy part. Everything that determines whether the door still runs smoothly in five years is in the track and what the track is fixed to. A top-hung system carries the entire weight of the leaf on a rail above the opening, and a 10mm toughened panel two metres tall is heavy. If that rail is fixed into plasterboard, or into a blockwork lintel with the wrong anchors, it will sag — and a track that sags by even a few millimetres over its length turns a smooth door into one that has to be shoved.
So the first question on any sliding door is not the glass, it is what is above the opening. A concrete lintel or a steel beam is ideal. A stud partition needs a properly fixed timber or steel header installed before the wall is closed up, which means the decision has to be made during construction rather than after. We check this at survey and we will say plainly when the wall as built cannot take it.
Configuration then follows the space. A barn-style door slides across the face of the wall, which is the simplest arrangement and shows the track as a design feature — often deliberately. A cavity slider disappears into a pocket inside the wall, which looks far cleaner but requires the pocket to be built in advance and makes future maintenance harder, because reaching the rollers means opening the wall. Multi-panel stacking systems slide several leaves to one side for a wide opening, and they need enough clear wall to park them all.
Two details separate a good sliding door from a frustrating one. Soft-close mechanisms at each end stop the leaf slamming into the end stop, which on a heavy glass panel is both alarming and hard on the hardware. And a floor guide, usually a small discreet channel or pin, stops the bottom of the leaf swinging — without one, a top-hung glass door will pendulum every time someone moves it quickly.

Why it matters
The whole reason to choose sliding — a hinged leaf needs a metre of clear floor that many rooms simply do not have.
We check what the track can be anchored into before quoting, because a sagging track ruins the door.
Damped ends stop a heavy glass leaf slamming into the stop, which is what destroys hardware over time.

How we do it
The steps specific to this work — not a generic checklist.
Structure first. If the header cannot carry a top-hung leaf, we say so before anything is priced.
Barn, cavity or stacking, decided by the wall, the parking space available and how visible you want the track.
Leaf width, overlap, track length and parking position planned so the door covers the opening fully.
Glass cut, cut-outs machined for the hangers, edges polished, then toughened.
Track levelled and fixed, leaf hung and aligned, floor guide set and soft-close adjusted.
Send drawings, dimensions or a photograph of the space. For anything beyond a straightforward replacement we will arrange a survey, because measuring it ourselves is the only way to quote a price that will not move.
Questions
Not directly. A top-hung leaf is heavy and plasterboard will not hold it. It needs a timber or steel header behind the board, which ideally goes in during construction. Where the wall is already finished we look for an alternative fixing route, and we will tell you honestly if there is not one.
A barn slider is simpler, cheaper and fully serviceable because the track is accessible. A cavity slider looks cleaner because the leaf disappears, but the pocket has to be built in advance and future roller maintenance means opening the wall. Both are good; they suit different priorities.
Less than a hinged door. A sliding leaf runs with a gap around it rather than compressing against seals, so it reduces noise but will not contain a conversation. If acoustic privacy is the requirement, a hinged acoustic door is the right answer.
No — a small floor guide is enough, and it is much better than a full floor track, which collects dust and creates a trip line. The guide simply stops the bottom of the leaf swinging.
Yes, with a multi-panel system, provided there is enough clear wall to park them. That parking space is the constraint that decides how wide the opening can be, so we measure it before designing the layout.
