In practice
A mirror fogs because the glass is colder than the humid air around it, so moisture condenses on the surface. Anti-fog mirrors solve that by removing the temperature difference rather than by coating the glass: a thin adhesive heating pad is bonded to the back of the mirror and wired to the bathroom lighting circuit, warming the glass a few degrees above the surrounding air. The condensation never forms in the first place. The pad draws very little power, it has no moving parts, and it is the only method that reliably works long term — sprays and wipes last days, not years.
That heating pad has to be positioned deliberately. It should sit behind the part of the mirror people actually use, not centred by default, and it must be sized to the panel: an undersized pad leaves a fogged border that looks worse than no pad at all. It also has to be wired by an electrician on a switched circuit, which means the decision cannot be left until after the tiling is finished.
The second thing worth understanding is why mirrors fail at the edges. When silvering develops black creeping edges or dark blotches, people assume poor quality glass. Usually it was fitted wrongly. Mirror silvering is protected by a paint backing, and it fails when moisture reaches it from behind or when an incompatible adhesive attacks the backing chemically. Fixing a mirror flat onto tile with continuous adhesive traps moisture against the back; using general-purpose silicone or a solvent-based mastic eats the backing from the day it is applied.
The correct method is straightforward: a neutral-cure mirror adhesive, applied in beads rather than a continuous bed so air can circulate behind the panel, plus mechanical support on anything heavy — and never fitted hard down onto a wet vanity top where standing water can wick up behind the edge.

Questions
Yes. The demister pad is wired to a switched circuit, usually the bathroom lighting, so it warms up when the light goes on. It draws very little power, but it is a fixed electrical connection and needs to be planned before tiling.
Only briefly. Sprays and applied coatings wear off within days or weeks and have to be reapplied constantly. A heating pad removes the cause rather than treating the symptom, which is why it is the only method we fit.
Moisture reaching the silvering from behind, or the wrong adhesive attacking the paint backing. Both are installation problems rather than mirror quality. Neutral-cure adhesive with an air gap behind the panel prevents it.
We recommend it on any large or full-height mirror, and particularly in a gym. The film holds fragments together if the panel is struck, which is exactly the risk in that environment.
